I love the way that Ayn Rand never apologized for her beliefs. She makes some very clear delineations in this legendary interview with Mike Wallace about coercion, virtue and love that I think are both insightful and inspirational.
I think that too often people don’t listen to her words carefully enough, to understand the distinctions she’s making, such as when she’s talking about love. Wallace tries to reduce her thinking to some kind of materialism or transaction, but Ayn makes it clear that love is based on the virtues of another. That she would give her love to someone who possesses the virtues she values resonates very deeply with me. Think about the nature of love and who we choose to love? If we reserve it for some (and axiomatically, not others), what is our criteria for doing so? Does it make us ‘stingy’ that we don’t love everyone? Or does loving everyone cheapen love so much that it means nothing?
